“Sisters Rising” – film sponsored by AVA
Dear AVA Colleagues:
You are invited to a private screening of the powerful, award winning film, Sisters Rising. This screening is sponsored by the Association of Violence Against Women Act Administrators (AVA).
Sisters Rising is the story of six Native American women reclaiming personal and tribal sovereignty in the face of ongoing sexual violence against Indigenous women in the United States.
The opportunity to watch this is time-limited and the link below WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE from 02/28/2021 to 03/13/2021. If you would like to learn more about the film please see the attached film summary included below.
There are a limited number of viewings for this screening, so please do not share this link with your subrecipients at this time. This viewing is intended for the VAWA Administrators in your agency. (Cannot view until February 28, 2021)
As a bonus, we invite you to watch a pre-recorded conversation, featuring the Director of Sisters Rising as well as two women profiled in the film. In the conversation, they discuss how tribal sovereignty intersects with the Violence Against Women Act and the grant requirements.
This panel includes:
Sarah Deer, Citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma, Professor at the University of Kansas, and author of “The Beginning & End of Rape: Confronting Sexual Violence in Native America”
Lisa Brunner, Anishinaabe and Wolf Clan from the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota, Director of Sacred Spirits First Nations Coalition
Willow O’Feral, Director/Producer of Sisters Rising
In the future, the recording of the panel discussion will be available on the AVA website.

As fellow VAWA Administrators, we hope you’ll find this film as inspiring as we did. Every First Nation is unique, and every relationship with the states that share their geographical boundaries is also unique.
It is up to each of us to find the best path for bridging our common humanity. We have so much to learn from each other.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to AVA, if you have any questions.
